Engagement rate

Engagement rate is the share of your audience that interacts with a post — through likes, comments, shares, and saves. It's the metric brands and creators use to gauge how resonant their content is, beyond raw follower counts. Enter total engagements and your followers or reach to calculate it.

How to calculate engagement rate

Formula

Engagement rate = (Total engagements ÷ Followers or reach) × 100

Add up all interactions on a post — likes, comments, shares, saves — and divide by your follower count (or by reach/impressions for a per-view rate), then multiply by 100. Dividing by followers is the most common approach; dividing by reach better reflects how the people who actually saw it responded. Pick one method and use it consistently to track trends.

Example

A post earned 1,250 engagements from 20,000 followers.

Engagement rate = (1,250 ÷ 20,000) × 100 = 6.25%.

Frequently asked questions

On Instagram, 1–3% is typical and above 3–6% is strong, with smaller accounts often seeing higher rates than large ones. Rates differ by platform and audience size, so benchmark against accounts of a similar size in your niche.
